Karlakattai Training is an ancient form of body conditioning practiced by predominantly Tamil people both, men and women, of ancient India. This art form has its roots going back to 1000’s of years and evidence of which can be seen in some of the carvings in the oldest temples and sculptures in India.
Karlakattai Training is a holistic approach to becoming and keeping fit, functional and healthy from the inside. It is a way of life and there are numerous benefits of practicing every day. This comprises of free hand movements called Mei Paadam - understanding your body, Udal Kattu Paadam - controlling or building your body and working with the Karlakattai (wooden club). All of these are carried out following breathing techniques called Kshaktiriya Pranayama – Kshakti means energy, riya means to gather and Pranayama is breathing, so gathering energy through breathing.
